We hold Retrospect in the same high regard that we do FileMaker.

EMC's Retrospect range of products are the only backup solutions recommended by Craft ICT. They fit our criteria of running on both the Macintosh platform running Mac OS X and 9 and PCs running all flavours of Windows, with additional support for LINUX clients.

Despite the increasing capabilities of Retrospect, it retains its user friendliness and doesn't require specialist technical know-how to maintain the backup routines. With minimal training an administrator often fulfils this role.

The software has matured particularly well on the Windows platform with add-ons that include Microsoft Exchange Server Agent, Open File Backup, Microsoft SQL Server Agent, User Initiated Restore, Disaster Recovery and Advanced Tape Support.

Possibly the most underrated features is Proactive Backup, which we have been using for years to ensure PowerBook and Laptop users have complete backups of their portable computers whenever they connect to office Ethernet network. So many times we hear people state "our laptop users copy their data over on the to server whenever they visit the office". With Retrospect Proactive Backup, the responsibility is taken away from the user and becomes automatic. Once connected, the whole computer is backed up in the background while the users continue to work unhindered, ensuring email, web browser favourites and configuration files are backed up with their data files.

The Windows press now recognise Retrospect as a major player in the backup market, which has resulted in many awards.

Oh - and did we mention that you can backup your Macs from your Windows Retrospect server, or backup your PCs from your Mac server?
